THE DIRECTORATE OF OPTOMETRIC CONTINUING EDUCATION AND TRAINING

The professional environment in which ophthalmic professionals are working is changing rapidly. The introduction of compulsory continuing education and training (CET) by the General Optical Council is designed to ensure that the provision of optometric services are fit for purpose and to assure the public of the continuing competence of practitioners. With its strategic overview of developments in the profession and a membership comprised of key stakeholders, DOCET is in a unique position to build on 15 years of experience and provide continuity at such an important time in the development of optometry.

CONTACT LENS CD-ROM

In 2004 DOCET produced two Contact Lens CD-ROMs, Fitting Spherical Contact Lenses and Initial Consultation, which were intended to be the first in a series of four. Unfortunately, the company that DOCET commissioned to produce this series went out of business before CD-ROMs 3 and 4 were completed.

We are very happy to announce that we have now been able to complete CD-ROM 3: Aftercare and Solutions.

By the end of the Aftercare lesson users will be better able to:

  • describe a competent aftercare routine
  • diagnose a range of common contact lens related problems
  • manage a range of common contact lens related problems
  • identify risks associated with lens wear

By the end of the Solutions lesson users will be better able to:

  • differentiate between the available solutions, and understand how they work
  • describe the legal requirements in the UK for marketing solutions for use with contact lenses
  • distinguish between soft and rigid lens solutions
  • pass on the proper hygiene advice to their patients
