Full Synopsis

More than half a million people in the UK are currently affected by AMD, and it accounts for half of all new registered cases of visual impairment each year.  With the ageing population, the prevalence of AMD is set to increase. This training film examines the causes of AMD and the risk factors, the aetiology and physiology of AMD, examination techniques, existing and new treatments and strategies for management.

Learning Objectives

  • to offer practical guidance on the handling of patients with AMD
  • appropriate management and referral options
  • to give instruction in the use of examination techniques and provide detailed illustration of "what the optometrist should see"
  • to update optometrists on current and new treatments

Chapter by Chapter

1. Introduction - presented by Miranda Krestovnikoff, this chapter provides and overview of Age Related Macular Degeneration and an introduction to the SOAP model

2. Symptoms and risk factors - this chapter looks at the symptoms presented by patients with AMD and the risk factors associated with it.  The information provided is supported by real life patient and optometrist examinations and real life still images taken from examinations

3. Anatomy - this technical section shows the development of AMD in the eye, through 3D animation

4. Examination techniques - using optometrists and real AMD patients, this chapter follows the SOAP framework when examining patients

5. Further examination techniques - this chapter mainly focuses on the uses and techniques of examining a patient using Optical Coherence Tomography.  Real time images are captured and explained.
