It is essential that optometrists keep good clinical records, not only as part of good practice, but also because the GOC considers that failure to keep acceptable and adequate records consititutes impaired fitness to practice. This training resource aims to provide clear guidance for optometric practitioners in the art of good record keeping, and looks at what the serious implications can be when adequate records are not kept.
This is a filmed drama depicting a series of events that lead to a community optometrist having to attend a GOC Fitness to Practice Hearing. It is supported by written guidance on good record keeping. A number of scenarios are illustrated where communication with a patient and the patient's family lead to an escalating series of misunderstandings, culminating in a serious eye condition and a subsequent complaint to the GOC.
The drama content was first produced as a sketch, written by the Association of Optometrists (AOP) legal team and performed as amateur dramatics at the National Optometric Conference in 2006. The drama was so well received by those present that it was agreed that it should be made available to all optometrists. The film includes a professional commentary in the 'Extras' section, which analyses each event and the evidence given during the hearing.
