Full Synopsis

Many optometrists are reluctant to examine children, particularly pre-school children.  For many this is the result of imagined difficulty and possibly lack of confidence.  For the optometrists contributing to this programme, examining a child patient is no more difficult than an adult; in fact in many cases they feel it is easier!  It can certainly be very rewarding.

This film resource aims to identify possible barriers to the effective care of child patients, and to demonstrate effective communication and examination skills. The programme also covers how to adapt the routine examination for children of all ages.

Learning Objectives:

  • To dispel any myths concerning preceived difficulties in examining children
  • To give support to practicing optometrists in examining and managing child patients effectively, encouraging them to have confidence in their own abilities and to trust their own observations
  • To encourage a positive attitude to this important patient group, demonstrating the benefits to the optometrist's job satisfaction and to their practice
  • To improve optometrists' skills in examining children by introducing new techniques
